Preliminary Day by Day Itinerary

January  14
Saturday
Start your winter adventure by flying to Helsinki.  My favorite is American Airlines and Finnair flights - Dinner and movies on board.

January  15
Sunday
In Helsinki, take quick flight to Kittila and transfer to Hotel Sirkantahti, located in the village of Sirkka at the foot of Levi  Mountain. There will be plenty of time to stroll the streets of this quaint resort village,  but first you should take a traditional  Finnish  sauna; there is a private one in every room.  It is one of the best ways we know to refresh after a long trip.  A welcome drink and dinner in the hotel will complete our first Lapland day (D)

January  16
Monday
Buffet breakfast will get us ready for a day of adventure. Boots and snowsuits will be provided for snowmobile and reindeer safari.  We will ride through the beautiful snow covered forest and over frozen lakes.  Then we’ll meet Rudolph and Blitsen on a reindeer sleigh ride.  Local Sami (Lappish) guides will sing typical ‘joiku’ songs and perform a fun ceremony. There will be many photo opportunities, so be sure to bring your camera.  (B)

January 17
Tuesday
Today we’ll take a short ride to our favorite husky dog farm for the 10km husky safari, complete with a tour of the kennels.  It is interesting to learn how “retired” dogs teach the little puppies.  You can experience the amazing thrill of mastering your own dog team or just sit back and let the experts do all the work. Upon return to the hotel, afternoon is free for a swim or spa treatments.   You can try cross-country or downhill skiing.  There are 17 ski lifts and a complete equipment rental office just a few minutes away. Several trendy spots are open nightly for tango or disco.  You may enjoy a walk in the moonlight to see if the Northern Lights are out tonight.  (B)

January 18
Wednesday
Day trip to Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle is our adventure today.  We’ll see the famous ski jump hill at Ounasvaara and ride along the Lumberjack’s Candle bridge.  We’ll visit the Arcticum Museum,  where exhibitions illustrate how people, animals and nature can adapt to the extreme conditions of the Artic areas.  We’ll watch a video show of the Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis.  Next,  we’ll stop in Santa’s Village to meet the real Santa Claus.  You can pose for pictures with him and mail a letter from his own post office.  Santa’s helpers answer thousands of letters from around the world every year.  The charming shops offer a variety of beautiful glassware, jewelry and clothing items for gifts and for you.  Tonight you could chance sleeping in the ice hotel.  (B)

January 19
Thursday
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and get ready to fill this free day with a variety of fun activities.  You may go horse back riding, spend the day in the beautiful spa being pampered or try out the new swimming pools.  Enjoy being in the warm pool and watch the skiers on the slopes.  Also, I like to take the Gondola to the top of Levi Mountain, admire beautiful view, have lunch up there and then walk down and watch the most breathtaking sunset. (B)

January 20
Friday
Time for breakfast, packing and a brisk walk or last minute shopping, before we say farewell to Levi.  A short flight will take us back to Helsinki, the capital of Finland.  On the way to Scandic Park Hotel, we’ll see the most  famous sights of the Daughter of the Baltic, as the city is often called.  We’ll pass the Senate Square with its majestic Cathedral, the fun open air Marketplace (yes, it  is open even in winter),  the Parliament Buildings, Atheneum, Kiasma -  Modern Art Museum and the Sibelius Monument. We’ll visit Temppeliaukio Church carved into the natural rock.  It has the most magnificent copper dome.  Our farewell dinner will be at our favorite Mamma Rosa Restaurant (B,D)

January 21
Saturday
After breakfast, we will have time to explore the center of Helsinki and especially Stockmann’s  Department Store,  a must on everyone’s list.  At noon, return to Helsinki airport for your return flight home.  Again my favorite would be Finnair and American Airlines.  (Meals enroute).

If you wish to extend your stay in Helsinki or in any of the neighboring European cities, we’ll help you make travel plans to complete your dream winter vacation.   -  Program is subject to change. (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)

THIS IS NOT THE FULL BROCHURE

We invite you to call Sarah or Gwen at 1-800-762-4216 to request the full brochure. The brochure will include Important Traveler Information (and answers to most questions) and a Reservation Form. We can send the brochure through the Postal Service or as a PDF attachment. If you would like to receive a PDF, probably the best way to keep the message from going into a SPAM filter is to send a message to sarah@serioustraveler.com. If you are already on our mailing list, no need to complete the entire brochure request form.
