April 21 Ubud Village Art
Tuesday Crafts Tour

Today we will see the daily lives of the people in Balinese villages. Stop at Kemenuh, a village famous for its wood carvers. Visit the homes of artists and have an opportunity to see them at work. Other points of interests: Painting Museum, where modern Balinese paintings are on display; Wenara Wana, a small forest nearby inhabited by a group of playful monkeys; and Pengosekan, a village well known for its handicrafts. This village has become more popular after a recent visit by Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Great Britain.

After lunch visit the Kedaton Monkey Forest and Mengwi, the former Royal Temple of Taman Ayun. Take the opportunity today to enjoy the sunset at Tanah Lot Temple. It is a spectacular place, possibly the best known and most photographed temple in Bali. The temple, perched on a little rocky islet, looks superb whether delicately lit by the dawn light or starkly outlined at sunset. For the Balinese, Tanah Lot is one of the most important and venerated sea temples. (B-L)

April 23 Land and People
Thursday

This morning we drive to the Blimbing Villages, passing terraced rice fields. Visit an elementary school to see Balinese students. They will be expecting us with an invitation to join them for a game! A gift will be presented by the leader of our group to the head master of the school (you are welcome to bring little gifts from your home town). Then take a soft trek from the village to a rice field. You will see the cows at work and the planting of the rice. You can even try planting rice yourself.

Next we will have the opportunity to visit a villager’s house. A Balinese family compound consists of a few small "buildings", whose position size and even those entitled to their use are all laid down by time-honored tradition. (B-L)

April 24 Bali
Friday

After breakfast, the morning is free at leisure. Take the opportunity to enjoy all the amenities of this delightful island, known as one of the loveliest in Indonesia.

In the late afternoon, we depart to the nearby village of Uluwatu to enjoy the unusual dance performance, Kechak. Probably the best known of the many Balinese dances, Kechak is popular because it doesn't have a gamelan accompaniment. Instead, the background is provided by a chanting 'choir' of men who provide the local pronunciation, 'chack-a-chack-a-chack' rhythm. This distinguishes the dance. The Kechak tells the tale of the Ramayana and the quest of Prince Rama to rescue his wife Sintha after she has been kidnapped by Rahwana, the King of Alengka. Farewell dinner at a local sea food restaurant in Jimbaran. (B-D)

April 25 Depart Denpasar, Bali
